New ISAPP Expert Recommendation: Scientific Criteria for Classifying Prebiotics

The study of prebiotics, a concept introduced nearly 30 years ago, continues to evolve with advances in high-resolution gene sequencing technologies and research on how dietary substances impact health through the microbiome. Both scientists and consumers may face confusion about which substances can genuinely be classified as prebiotics, but a recently published expert recommendation from ISAPP aims to clarify the criteria for prebiotic substances.

This ISAPP webinar, recorded on Dec 11, 2024, addresses the challenges in defining and classifying prebiotics, describing a unified, global approach for the scientific field moving forward.

October 19, 2022. ISAPP webinar: Human milk oligosaccharides — Prebiotics in a class of their own?

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are non-digestible carbohydrates and are the third most abundant component in human milk after lactose and fat. More than 200 different varieties have currently being identified in human milk, of which 2’-fucosyllactose is the most prevalent. HMOs play an important role in the development of the intestinal microbiota and the immune system of infants, which may influence health later in life. This webinar features Ardythe Morrow PhD, Professor of Pediatrics, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, giving an overview of what HMOs are, how they can play a role in infant health and the current scientific state of the art on postulated beneficial effects.

In this webinar, Prof. Daniele Del Rio (University of Parma, Italy) and Prof. Yves Desjardins (Université Laval, Canada) address polyphenols in plants, evidence that polyphenols provide health benefits, how gut microbiota modulates the bioactivity of dietary polyphenols, and whether available knowledge about polyphenols meets expectations for prebiotic substances. This webinar is hosted by Prof. Bob Hutkins from the University of Nebraska and Dr. Maria Wiese from TNO.
