New Frontiers in Female Reproductive Tract Microbiota and Biotic Interventions: Mini-symposium

In this mini-symposium, a panel of international experts cover the state of knowledge about the vaginal, cervical and endometrial microbiota and implications for health and disease, as well as insights for the development of probiotics and microbiome-targeted interventions. Recorded on April 2, 2025.

Topics covered include:

  • Evidence linking the vaginal microbiome composition to preterm birth risk, and host-microbe mechanisms contributing to the onset of early labor
  • The relationship between the vaginal microbiome, human papilloma virus and cervical cancer risk – similarities and differences across geographic cohorts
  • The potential of commensal vaginal microbiota and administered probiotic species (e.g. Lactobacillus) to maintain female reproductive health and protect against disease
  • Insights from clinical trials on probiotics and live biotherapeutic product interventions across the globe
  • Future targets for research and development of novel biotic-related therapies for female reproductive health

New ISAPP Expert Recommendation: Scientific Criteria for Classifying Prebiotics

The study of prebiotics, a concept introduced nearly 30 years ago, continues to evolve with advances in high-resolution gene sequencing technologies and research on how dietary substances impact health through the microbiome. Both scientists and consumers may face confusion about which substances can genuinely be classified as prebiotics, but a recently published expert recommendation from ISAPP aims to clarify the criteria for prebiotic substances.

This ISAPP webinar, recorded on Dec 11, 2024, addresses the challenges in defining and classifying prebiotics, describing a unified, global approach for the scientific field moving forward.

October 19, 2022. ISAPP webinar: Human milk oligosaccharides — Prebiotics in a class of their own?

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are non-digestible carbohydrates and are the third most abundant component in human milk after lactose and fat. More than 200 different varieties have currently being identified in human milk, of which 2’-fucosyllactose is the most prevalent. HMOs play an important role in the development of the intestinal microbiota and the immune system of infants, which may influence health later in life. This webinar features Ardythe Morrow PhD, Professor of Pediatrics, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, giving an overview of what HMOs are, how they can play a role in infant health and the current scientific state of the art on postulated beneficial effects.

April 28, 2022. ISAPP webinar: The prebiotic potential of polyphenols

In this webinar, Prof. Daniele Del Rio (University of Parma, Italy) and Prof. Yves Desjardins (Université Laval, Canada) address polyphenols in plants, evidence that polyphenols provide health benefits, how gut microbiota modulates the bioactivity of dietary polyphenols, and whether available knowledge about polyphenols meets expectations for prebiotic substances. This webinar is hosted by Prof. Bob Hutkins from the University of Nebraska and Dr. Maria Wiese from TNO.

April 20, 2022. ISAPP webinar: Fermented Foods and Health — Does Today’s Science Support Yesterday’s Tradition?

ISAPP and Today’s Dietitian collaborated on a free webinar in which Hannah Holscher, PhD, RD, and Jennifer Burton, MS, RD, LDN discussed the foundational elements of fermented foods, the role of microbes in fermentation, and more.
