Probiotics and Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Numerous studies have tested the use of probiotics to prevent a serious condition called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants. Despite the strong evidence for benefits in preventing NEC and its consequences, complexities exist in practice. Thus, the standard of care regarding probiotic use for preterm infants currently differs around the world. ISAPP, along with the NEC Society, encourages parents of preterm infants to remain informed about their choices, and speak with a health professional about the benefits and risks of probiotic treatment.
