The vaginal microbiota: Supporting reproductive tract health
In contrast with the highly diverse gut microbiota, the vaginal microbiota is dominated by one particular genus of bacteria – Lactobacillus. These bacteria contribute to keeping the vagina healthy. The overall composition of the vaginal microbiota changes throughout a woman’s life, and is shaped by factors such as life stage, health status and diet. Specific probiotics are shown to support the treatment and prevention of vaginal infections.
