Your guide to new probiotic names: Lactobacillus

Get to know the names of your probiotics! Some probiotic bacteria fall under the broad category of lactobacilli. In 2020, a group of scientists got together and organized this category (genus) of bacteria into subgroups based on the genes they had in common. The names of those subgroups are what you’ll find on the labels of probiotic products today (sometimes just designated with the letter L). On a label, be sure to look for all three parts of the bacterial name: genus, species and strain.
