The Big Breakup of Lactobacillus

Not all lactobacilli fall under the genus name of Lactobacillus – because in 2020, a group of scientists agreed on a re-classification of this genus into 25 different genera. The new groups better reflect genetic relationships and adhere to bacterial nomenclature conventions. And since many strains of lactobacilli are studied for their probiotic effects, the new genus names may facilitate scientific understandings of common mechanisms that could mediate the health benefits they confer.
