Probiotics and prebiotics in intestinal health and disease: from biology to the clinic

With recent increased interest in using probiotics and prebiotics to modulate the gut microbiota, this paper discusses gut-derived effects of probiotics and prebiotics in humans. The health benefits of some probiotic ingredients may be mediated through the modification of gut microbiota composition or function, whereas all prebiotic ingredients, by definition, confer health benefits via gut microbiota modification. Probiotic and prebiotic products must be shown to be effective in order to justify their use in the clinic.
