Postbiotics: The concept and their use in healthy populations
This review follows up on the 2021 scientific consensus definition of postbiotics, and focuses on evidence for the use of postbiotics in healthy populations. Postbiotics are mainly under development for use in infant nutrition and in pediatric and adult gastroenterology. Mechanisms of action are still under investigation. Evidence is currently lacking for the use of postbiotics in healthy individuals, although this is a promising area for the future.
