Developments in understanding and applying prebiotics in research and practice
This paper emerged from an ISAPP meeting discussion group in 2018. Experts noted that currently a limited number of ingredients have both the demonstrated mechanism of action and the defined health benefits that are required to meet the criteria for a prebiotic. Significant commercial interest exists, but additional research is needed to identify and commercialize prebiotics with unique health benefits. Regulatory disparities exist in different countries, causing some uncertainty around allowable prebiotic claims.
